Domenikos Theotokopoulos Exhibition Hall

A way in, for everyone

Fodele is the village where Domenikos Theotokopoulos — El Greco — was born, and the exhibition hall in the valley is how visitors are told that story. The problem with a small cultural building in an old olive grove is that everything about it is difficult: the ground is uneven, the fabric is old, and the services were laid a long time ago.

The grounds were rebuilt to create the accessibility conditions the site did not have, so that reaching the exhibition is not a matter of who you are. The trees stayed — the old olive now sits inside a new cast planter rather than being cleared for a level surface.

Inside, the building was renewed rather than restyled: plumbing and electrical installations replaced, special lighting fitted for showing work, a new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system, modern insulation, and the washrooms rebuilt from scratch. Work that promotes culture and improves the everyday, in the client's own words.
