A small job at a place that kept hurting people

The junction where Eleftheriou Venizelou Avenue meets El Greco and Thriamvou streets was, by the company's own account, one of the most dangerous crossings in Gazi. Not because it was complicated — because it was wide. The road widths let drivers carry speed straight through a point where people were trying to cross, and the accident record followed from that.

A roundabout is the cheapest way to delete a straight line. But the work underneath it was the difficult part: rebuilding water, storm drainage and lighting networks through ground carrying services from several different providers, layered over earlier interventions made after subsidence — while the traffic that made the junction dangerous in the first place kept running through it, every day, uninterrupted.

What replaced it is wider than a traffic measure: pavements you can walk, a tactile route you can follow without sight, a cycle lane around the outside, new lighting, and planting on the footways and in the middle of the circle.
