Agios Georgios Hospital, Chania
The second emergency department of the island's A&E programme: renovation, extension and redesign at the General Hospital of Chania, photographed in June at the stage where a hospital is still brick, dust and chalk lines.

Two cities, one standard of emergency care
The A&E programme runs on both sides of the island at once: PAGNI in Heraklion, and Agios Georgios in Chania here. The Chania works are younger, which is exactly why these photographs matter. This is what every finished hospital floor looks like first: brick shell, chalk lines, drawings taped to the wall, and crews who have done this before.

The site log, June
Four entries from one month on site, in the order every hospital floor is actually built.
Setting out
Before anything rises, the department is drawn on the floor: instrument lines, chalk and string turning the architects' plan into positions a crew can build to.

Masonry
The new rooms arrive block by block, carried by hand to the lines laid out the week before. Walls first, openings held by lintels, every course checked.

Structure
Where the old building meets the new scope, steel and grinder work: existing members cut back, strengthened and made ready to carry a department that never sleeps.

First fix
The ceilings begin to fill: conduit runs, brackets and the first kilometres of the services a modern emergency department carries above every corridor.
